Is Bad Breath a Problem for You?

If so, you are not alone. Bad breath is a very common problem and can be due to a variety of causes. Eating strong smelling foods, such as garlic, onions, coffee; smoking; dry mouth; and/or a lack of proper oral hygiene can all contribute to the problem of bad breath. The primary issue is whether or not this is a persistent problem for you.

Persistent bad breath could be an indication of a more serious underlying dental issue. After brushing, bacteria gradually builds up on our teeth, gums, and tongue. When this layer of bacteria (called plaque) is not cleaned away properly and regularly, the bacteria releases smelly gases resulting in bad breath. Over time the continued build-up of plaque leads to gum disease and tooth decay which can progress into tooth loss if left untreated. Gaps in-between teeth can also be a culprit for bad breath because they act as food traps and if the spaces in-between the teeth are not cleaned properly and regularly this can cause an unpleasant smell. To ensure good dental health and that bad breath will not become an issue, you should see your dentist and hygienist for regular examinations and thorough professional cleans. Our dentists and hygienists also advise our patients on the necessary treatments, tools, and methods necessary to maintain excellent oral hygiene.

Remember to brush your teeth, gums, and tongue twice a day every day including in-between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes. If you wear dentures, you should still be brushing any natural teeth and your gums twice a day as well as cleaning the denture itself with brushing and soaking in a solution made for dentures. If you have any concerns about your teeth/gums or feel that you are suffering from persistent bad breath, please contact our reception team who will schedule an appointment for you with one of our expert dentists.
