TREATMENT OVERVIEW

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are a modern orthodontic system that uses a series of custom-made, transparent plastic trays to gradually move teeth into their correct positions. Each aligner in the series is worn for a set period before progressing to the next, applying gentle and controlled pressure to guide tooth movement in a carefully planned sequence.

Because each aligner is made from smooth, transparent medical-grade plastic, they are far less noticeable than traditional metal or ceramic braces. They can also be removed entirely for eating, drinking, brushing and special occasions — making them a highly practical option for adults with busy professional or social lives.

Clear aligners are effective for treating a wide range of orthodontic concerns, including crowding, spacing, mild overbites and underbites, and teeth that have shifted following previous orthodontic treatment. Treatment is digitally planned from start to finish, allowing us to show you a simulation of your expected results before you commit.

THE PROCESS

Your Clear Aligner Treatment Journey

Explore examples of smile transformations achieved through whitening, bonding, Invisalign, and restorative dentistry.
Orthodontic Consultation & Assessment
We carry out a thorough assessment of your teeth, bite, and jaw to determine whether clear aligners are the right option for your situation. Digital scans — with no need for messy traditional impressions — are taken to give us a precise record of your current tooth positions.
Digital Treatment Planning
Your full treatment plan is designed digitally, mapping the precise sequence of tooth movements from start to finish. This allows us to show you a clear visualisation of how your teeth are expected to move and what your smile may look like at the end of treatment — before a single aligner is made.
Aligner Wear & Progress Reviews
Your custom aligners are manufactured and issued in sets. You'll wear each aligner as instructed — typically 20 to 22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning. Regular progress appointments allow us to monitor tooth movement and ensure treatment is tracking as planned.
Completion & Retention
Once all planned tooth movements are complete and you're happy with your result, custom retainers are made to hold your teeth in their new positions. Wearing your retainer as advised is essential — it's what keeps your result permanent.

Frequently Asked Questions About Clear Aligners

Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of your case and the extent of tooth movement required. Mild cases with limited movement can sometimes be completed in as little as three to six months. More involved cases — particularly those involving significant crowding, spacing, or bite correction — may take twelve months or longer. During your initial consultation, we provide a clear estimated timeline based on your digital treatment plan so you know what to expect from the start.

For the majority of mild to moderate orthodontic concerns that adults typically present with, clear aligners are just as effective as fixed braces. The key factors that determine outcome are the quality of the treatment plan and patient compliance — aligners need to be worn for the recommended hours each day to achieve planned movement on schedule. For more complex cases, particularly those involving significant bite correction or tooth rotation, fixed appliances may offer greater control. We'll assess your case honestly and recommend the most appropriate option.

Some patients notice a very slight change in their speech — particularly a mild lisp — in the first few days of wearing new aligners. This is completely normal and resolves quickly as the tongue adapts to the aligners. The vast majority of patients find that aligners have no meaningful impact on their ability to speak professionally or socially. Most people in conversation won't be aware you're wearing them at all.

Yes — one of the significant practical advantages of clear aligners over fixed braces is that you can eat and drink completely normally. Aligners should be removed before eating any food or drinking anything other than plain water, which eliminates dietary restrictions entirely. After eating, simply brush your teeth and clean your aligner before replacing it. This also means oral hygiene is far easier to maintain during treatment than with fixed braces.

Aligners should be cleaned gently with a soft toothbrush and cool water each time you remove them. Avoid using hot water as this can warp the plastic. Dedicated aligner cleaning tablets or a gentle, clear, unscented soap can also be used. Always store aligners in their case when not in your mouth — leaving them on surfaces or wrapped in tissue is a common cause of accidental damage or loss. Keeping your teeth clean before replacing aligners is equally important to prevent staining and bacterial build-up inside the trays.

Contact us as soon as possible if an aligner is lost or damaged. In most cases, we'll recommend either moving on to the next aligner in the sequence or going back to the previous one while a replacement is ordered. We keep your digital records throughout treatment, so a replacement can be manufactured quickly. Carrying your previous aligner as a backup is a sensible habit while going through treatment.
