What is Emergency Dentistry?

Emergency dentistry covers urgent dental treatment for problems that require immediate attention — either because they are causing significant pain, pose a risk to your oral or general health, or involve trauma to your teeth, gums, or jaw.

At Barker Dental Care, we understand that dental emergencies are frightening and painful. Our priority is to see you quickly, assess the situation thoroughly, relieve your pain, and provide the most appropriate treatment to stabilise things — with full follow-up care planned as needed.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat:

  • Severe toothache or throbbing dental pain
  • Dental abscess or facial swelling
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken tooth
  • Knocked-out or dislodged tooth
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Broken denture or dental appliance
  • Soft tissue injury (cut or laceration to gums, lips, or cheeks)
  • Broken or loose orthodontic appliance causing pain

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If you're in significant pain, have suffered a dental injury, or are concerned about a sudden change in your oral health, it's always best to call us. We'd rather hear from you and reassure you it can wait than have you suffer unnecessarily or leave a serious problem unaddressed.

Why Prompt Emergency Dental Care Matters

Immediate Pain Relief

Dental pain can be debilitating. Emergency treatment is focused first and foremost on getting you out of pain as quickly as possible, whether through treatment, pain management, or both.

Prevents Problems From Worsening

Dental emergencies left untreated rarely improve on their own. A cracked tooth can fracture further, an abscess can spread, and a knocked-out tooth becomes unrestorable after a very short window. Acting quickly limits the damage and expands your treatment options.

Increases the Chance of Saving Your Tooth

For knocked-out or severely damaged teeth, time is critical. The sooner you're seen by a dentist, the greater the chance of saving the tooth. Don't wait — call us immediately.

Expert Assessment

Not every dental concern that feels like an emergency requires immediate clinical intervention. Equally, some situations that seem minor can indicate something more serious. Our team will assess your situation quickly and accurately so you get the right care, not just the fastest care.

Peace of Mind

Knowing that a trusted dental team is only a phone call away — and that they'll do everything possible to see you quickly — provides enormous reassurance when something goes wrong.

Ongoing Care After the Emergency

Emergency treatment is the first step, not the last. Once the immediate situation is resolved, we'll put together a plan to fully restore your dental health, so you don't simply patch things up — you come out the other side with a healthier smile.

THE PROCESS

What Happens When You Contact Us in an Emergency

Here's what to expect when you call us with a dental emergency:
Call Us Immediately
Call the practice as soon as possible. Our team will ask you a few brief questions to understand your situation, provide any immediate first aid advice over the phone, and arrange the earliest available appointment — often the same day.
Emergency Assessment
When you arrive, your dentist will carry out a prompt but thorough assessment, including X-rays if needed. We'll identify the cause of your problem, assess its severity, and determine the best course of action.
Immediate Treatment
Our priority is to relieve your pain and stabilise the situation. Depending on what's needed, this could involve draining an abscess, applying a temporary restoration, extracting a tooth, or re-cementing a lost crown — all carried out with care and with your comfort as the priority.
Follow-Up and Restoration
After the emergency is resolved, we'll schedule any further appointments needed to fully restore your tooth or teeth. We'll explain everything clearly and ensure you leave with a clear plan and the confidence that you're in safe hands.

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dentistry

Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it's dirty, rinse it very gently with milk or saline — do not scrub it. If possible, try to place it back in the socket or keep it moist in milk or held gently inside the cheek. Call us immediately — the sooner you act, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

A persistent, severe toothache should always be taken seriously, particularly if it's accompanied by swelling, fever, or a bad taste in your mouth — these can be signs of an abscess, which requires prompt treatment. Call us and describe your symptoms; we'll advise whether you need to be seen urgently.

A dental abscess is a serious infection that will not resolve on its own. Call us immediately. In the meantime, do not apply heat to the area, and avoid taking anti-inflammatory medication if you are sensitive to it. If you experience significant facial swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to your nearest A&E.

Yes. We will do our best to help anyone experiencing a dental emergency, whether or not they are a registered patient. Please call us and we'll arrange an appointment as soon as possible. If you'd like to become a regular patient after your emergency is resolved, we're always happy to welcome new patients.

Please call the practice number and listen for out-of-hours guidance. For severe infections with facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or swallowing, please go to your nearest A&E or call 111 immediately.

A lost crown isn't always painful, but it should be dealt with promptly to protect the exposed tooth underneath. Keep the crown safe if you can, and call us to arrange an appointment. In the meantime, avoid eating on that side and be cautious with very hot, cold, or sticky foods.

We'll always inform you of costs before carrying out any treatment. Emergency appointments typically involve an examination fee plus the cost of any treatment provided. Patients on our dental plan benefit from emergency cover as part of their plan — please ask our team for details.
