What is Children's Dentistry?

Children's dentistry — sometimes called paediatric dentistry — focuses on the oral health needs of children from infancy through to their teenage years. It covers everything from monitoring the development of baby and adult teeth to treating decay, applying preventive treatments, and helping young patients build confidence and positive associations with dental care.

At Barker Dental Care, we understand that children's dental experiences shape their attitude towards oral health for the rest of their lives. That's why we invest time in making every visit as positive, comfortable, and fun as possible — building trust with young patients so that looking after their teeth becomes a habit they carry into adulthood.

What Children's Dentistry Covers:

  • Monitoring the development of baby and adult teeth
  • Early detection and treatment of tooth decay
  • Fissure sealants to protect back teeth from decay
  • Fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel
  • Guidance on diet, brushing, and oral hygiene habits
  • Assessment of bite development and jaw alignment
  • Managing dental anxiety in young patients
  • Advice for parents on caring for children's teeth at home

When Should My Child First Visit the Dentist?

We recommend bringing your child for their first dental visit as soon as their first tooth appears, or no later than their first birthday. Early visits are about familiarisation as much as examination — helping your child get used to the sights, sounds, and friendly faces of the dental practice before any treatment is ever needed.

Why Regular Dental Care Matters for Children

Builds Positive Dental Habits Early

Children who visit the dentist regularly from an early age grow up viewing dental care as a normal, positive part of life. This dramatically reduces the likelihood of dental anxiety and poor oral health habits in adulthood.

Early Detection of Problems

Children's teeth are more vulnerable to decay than adult teeth, and problems can progress quickly. Regular check-ups allow us to catch issues at their earliest stage, when treatment is simpler and less stressful for your child.

Preventive Treatments That Protect

Treatments like fissure sealants and fluoride applications significantly reduce the risk of decay in children's teeth. Preventive care now means far less chance of fillings or extractions down the line.

Monitoring Growth and Development

Regular visits allow us to track the development of your child's teeth and jaw, identifying potential orthodontic concerns early when they are most straightforward to address.

Guidance for Parents

We work with parents as much as with children, providing practical advice on diet, brushing techniques, and habits like thumb-sucking or dummy use that can affect dental development.

A Dental Home for Life

Bringing your child to Barker Dental Care means they grow up with a familiar, trusted dental team. As they transition into adulthood, the continuity of care and existing relationship makes all the difference.

THE PROCESS

What to Expect at Your Child's Dental Visit

We know that a child's first few visits set the tone for their relationship with dentistry. Here's how we make every appointment a good one:
A Warm Welcome
From the moment you arrive, our team makes a point of getting to know your child by name. There's no rush — we take time to chat, show them the equipment, and let them feel comfortable before anything else happens.
The Examination
Your child's dentist will carry out a gentle, thorough examination of their teeth, gums, and jaw development. For younger children especially, we use age-appropriate language and a gentle approach that keeps the experience positive.
Preventive Care
We may apply fluoride varnish or fissure sealants as appropriate to protect your child's teeth. We'll also talk through any habits or dietary factors that could be affecting their dental health and offer practical tips for home care.
Keeping You Informed
After the appointment, we'll talk you through what we found, any treatments provided, and what to expect next. If any follow-up treatment is needed, we'll explain it in clear, straightforward terms and help you plan the next steps at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions About Children's Dentistry

We recommend your child's first visit as soon as their first tooth comes through, or by their first birthday at the latest. Early visits are low-key and focused on familiarity rather than treatment — the goal is simply to get your child comfortable with the environment and establish good habits from the start.

We recommend check-ups every six months for most children. Children's teeth can be more vulnerable to decay than adult teeth, and problems can progress quickly — so regular monitoring is important. Your child's dentist will advise on the right frequency based on their individual needs.

We're very experienced in managing dental anxiety in children. We take a calm, unhurried approach — never rushing or forcing — and use child-friendly language to explain everything we're doing. For very anxious children, we may suggest a series of short acclimatisation visits before any examination or treatment takes place.

Fissure sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the grooves on the biting surfaces of back teeth, where decay most commonly begins. They are quick, painless, and highly effective at preventing cavities in children. We typically recommend them for permanent back teeth as they come through, usually between the ages of 6 and 14.

Yes — baby teeth matter a great deal. They help children chew and speak properly, hold space for the adult teeth coming through, and contribute to jaw development. Decay or early loss of baby teeth can affect the position of adult teeth and cause unnecessary pain and distress for your child.

If your child knocks out a permanent tooth, keep it moist — ideally in milk or held gently in the mouth — and contact us immediately. Time is critical for replanting a knocked-out adult tooth. For baby teeth, replanting is not usually advised, but it's still important to contact us promptly so we can assess the situation.

Yes. We welcome children as part of family dental plan arrangements. Please ask our reception team about the options available for including children in your dental plan.
